Ever since Pride was moved from June to October and we mourned the loss of alterna-queer events GlitterBomb! and Mondo Homo, Atlanta has had a Stonewall Weekend-shaped hole in its southern fried heart. During a time that is usually filled with pop up dance parties, pool time get-togethers, and backyard beer busts, one local organization has arrived to celebrate what it means to be southern and queer.
Southern Fried, Queer Pride sprung up on the scene last year in a big way. One of the goals of the festival was not only to create dynamic events for the entire LGBTQ+ spectrum, but to connect queers to much needed resources and community. This year also promises some sickening entertainment, including Baltimore rapper Abdu Ali and performance artists NIC Kay, Ella-SAURUS-Rex, and Koochie Ku.
“Southern Fried Queer Pride is a full course meal this year,” said co-organizer Taylor Alxndr. “From expanding our workshops, to pulling in people from the rest of the South, to creating hospitality suites—we've really expanded our programming. SFQP always aims to diversify what we bring to the table and this year is no different!”
This year, the organizers are offering Hospitality Suites where some of Queer Atlanta’s pocket communities can gather, network, and share resources on Saturday afternoon. There will be a Queer and Trans People of Color Suite (QTPoC only), Trans/Non-Binary/GNC Suite, a Youth Suite for attendees ages 13-21, and an Art Suite where you can participate in a public art project.
All #SFQP events are 18+ with a suggested donation of $5-$20. No one will be turned away due to lack of funds, but (if you can) we suggest you reach deep and support this awesome organization!
